 MSR July 2020

If you enjoy this monthly blog, I also put out bi-weekly animated film reviews and semi-regular manga reviews, among other content. Check out my Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/kyoukasuigetsu) and Ko-Fi (https://ko-fi.com/kyoukasuigetsu) to support my endeavors. Thanks so much

Disclaimer: Scanlations and official sources both have a place in the community, but buy official manga volumes to support the author. If you can, also subscribe to Crunchyroll and/or Shonen Jump through Viz Media to read chapters nearly simultaneous with Japan. Most of the series covered can be found through legal means, so please encourage the industry that gives us what we love

Jump is taking a break this month, seemingly unrelated to the Obon holiday, which is in early August.

Haikyu, a major series that started the same year as Food Wars, Assassination Classroom and Saiki Kusuo, has concluded, leaving Shounen Jump without any sports series for the moment

The last new series, until late summer, is Me and Roboco by Shuuhei Miyazaki, previously having released a series back in 2014 and also known for the Promised Neverland gag manga. Our lead wants an Order-Maid, but they’re too expensive. His mom is convinced to get one, but it’s very bizarre and generally incompetent, but does her best, even saving her master from a truck (and destroying it in the process), which makes him think she isn’t so bad.

Another new series, from Jump+, debuted on Viz’s manga vault, Ghost Reaper Girl, by Akihisa Ikeda or Akissa Saike, previously having written Rosario + Vampire. Our lead, Chloe, turns out to be a spirit medium (not unlike Suzu in Ayakashi Triangle), targeted by spirits to merge with her. But Kai, a Ghost Reaper from Hades and a big fan of her acting performances in TV, saves her, convincing Chloe to merge with him briefly and potentially to contract so he can protect her

World Trigger took an unexpected break this month, should return in August

Dr. Stone 157-159

We see how Xeno and Senkuu both deduced particular things about the petrified swallows, and both revived around the same time supposedly. It’s also revealed that the others in Xeno’s group were together at a meeting of notable people in America related to DARPA

After a flashback with Xeno’s group reviving, the platinum ring swallowed by Carlos used to mass produce nitric acid and create a basis for scientific technology, Luna fails to point out Taiju.  But before Stanley can shoot Taiju, Xeno stops him, having figured out through an encoded message that Senkuu is the true scientist, Taiju a decoy

Xeno uses science to deduce Senkuu’s height and Stan figures out where Senkuu is with his sniping skills even after he hides. Senkuu, using a dilatant fluid, creates a makeshift bulletproof vest of sorts, but Stan’s bullet fragments into pieces, seemingly wounding Senkuu even through the defense.

We Never Learn 165-167

At the winter trip, Nariyuki and Fumino are briefly stranded in a blizzard, forced to get closer and Nariyuki admitting feelings he has, though he doesn’t specify anyone, Fumino recognizing that he’s in love with someone. Afterwards, we learn that Nariyuki and Fumino’s feelings are more connected than they realize and that he rejected Uruka’s confession, clearly in love with Fumino but not able to express it well

Both Nariyuki and Fumino internally have feelings for each other, Fumino still struggling with the sense that she’s betraying Rizu and Uruka. But Uruka tells Nariyuki he can’t be worried about what she thinks from his rejection and needs to act, Rizu confronting Fumino and helping her realize she needs to be honest to her feelings and that friends will support her through such things. And when Fumino reads a message Nariyuki gave to her dad, she decides to go and confess to him

Fumino confesses to Nariyuki, who admits his feelings in return, both finally able to get past the limitations they placed on themselves for the sake of others. The pair views the stars, Nariyuki showing Fumino stars even on the ground with lights he set up earlier.

My Hero Academia 277-278

Deku, Bakugou, Endeavor and Gran Torino all fight Shigaraki, trying to take him down with teamwork while Aizawa’s Erasure is still negating his Quirks. And Mt. Lady is holding back Gigantomachia as best she can, the only one close to his size.

Gigantomachia continues to rampage, Midnight failing to subdue him, Mt. Lady still struggling. But Momo, contacted by Midnight, is told she can stop the titanic villain with sedatives (even though it’s very risky), the other Yuuei students assisting to hold him back while she prepares.

Fire Force 223-226

Two Pillars emerge, the giant Infernal handled by Haijima and the 2nd Division, while Benimaru heads off, realizing who the Demon Infernal is, clearly his father that he wishes to fight alone

Shinmon and his father square off with their techniques, but it seems that this Hibachi is a doppelganger, but also possesses some memories of the former head of Asakusa’s fire fighting division

Remembering the past after bickering with Hibachi’s doppelganger, Shinmon recalls how he was told he needs to pick his battles better, that his strength is something to be used properly. But Hibachi tells Konrou that he’s trying to help Shinmon be the next head of the Asakusa firefighters, even if his methods of teaching are brutish.

We see that Hibachi, as implied, adopted Benimaru, not his blood relative, to be his heir and intends him to take over. He wants Shinmon to find the resolve to embrace the emotions of everyone connected to the ones he kills as a fire fighter, himself stabbed by the son of a woman who turned to an Infernal

One Piece 984-985

While Momonosuke’s execution looms closer, the other segment of the Akazaya Nine is teleported in by Law and meets up with Marco, Catviper and Izo. Luffy learns that Yamato is Kaidou’s daughter (or son, technically?), inspired by Oden’s manliness to imitate him and that she desires to open up Wano

Luffy and Yamato discuss about how they both want to stop Kaidou and that Yamato wishes to go with Luffy on his ship, imprisoned by his father with exploding shackles. While Kiku and others fight against Kanjuro, we learn that Kaidou and Big Mom’s alliance intends to get the ancient weapons. And Orochi’s objection is met with decapitation, killed by Kaidou, who says they intend to make Onigashima the new capital for pirates to prepare for war against the World Government

Black Clover 256-258

Yami is attacked by Dante’s power at 80%, his upper limit, but even with his training, it’s difficult. However, the Black Bulls captain pushes past his limits and condenses his Mana Zone even more, blasting away most of Dante’s body with a massive blast

Dante, using his own Body Magic, regenerates with the Devil’s enhancement, transforming into a horrible monster and pushing Yami back. Asta is asked to help, getting a second wind to assist his captain.

Asta can’t quite keep up with Dante, Yami having to assist, so he makes a deal with his devil, giving up his arm, which allows him to utilize the most of the devil’s power he can to fight back.
